Quinta do Lago

Course Details

Pinheiros Altos

Pinheiros Altos Golf Course was designed by the American architect Ronald Fream and is situated in Quinta do Lago, next to the Ria Formosa Course.

Pinheiros Altos is 6,236 metres long, with a par of 72 (36+36), each nine having a different structure. The outward nine holes are built on hilly terrain amongst umbrella-pinewoods, whereas the back nine are on more level ground with many water hazards coming into play.

With the introduction of the island green 17th hole and the new Par 5 12th hole the Pinheiros Altos course is quickly developing its reputation as a «must» course to play when in Algarve.

Quinta do Lago Golf

The first is a par 4 of 367 meters. The majestic pines impede a direct drive towards the green. The right side of the fairway sets up the ideal position. The green is ample and although it is protected by bunkers, you can get away with a running approach. The par 4 tenth has exotic gardens to its left imposing an "out of bounds" penalty off the elevated tee... not the time for one of those hooks. The fairway is cut by deep valleys in front of the tee and green. Driving towards an elevated plateau doesn't give you sight of a strategic bunker in front of the green. Anything short will, of course, be pretty sure to find it. This is a delightful hole and if you can end up weather par here, it's very satisfying. The 12th is probably the most interesting. It is a severe, left-handed dog-leg The huge lake to the left and the distant bunkers encourage a long drive. The safest approach is to use a mid-iron to the fairway. Then you play over the lake. The green is generous and has a bank at the back. The finishing hole is a majestic par 5 of 480 meters. The drive, out over water to the landing area, opens up the dog-leg to the right. The second shot will usually reach the base of the hill. The green above you is Beverly stepped. Depending on the flag position, putting here can be a real nightmare. If you have landed beyond the pin, you are looking back downhill, possibly back off the green. If you are short, then there is a more than likely chance that the ball will rob back anyway.

São Lourenzo Golf

On the Quinta do Lago estate, Joseph Lee and W. Roquemore designed the San Lorenzo golf course, near the limits of the Ria Formosa Park.

San Lorenzo is different from the other courses at Quinta do Lago, but the quality of its maintenance is as good.

It is a par 72, 6,238 metres in length, and it has some holes of exquisite beauty, mainly those near Ria Formosa, such as the par-3 5th, that provides a glimpse at the Ria as well as two par 4's, 6th and 7th, that hug the edges of the wetlands. According to some of the best players in the country, the par-5 8th is the most difficult hole, because it requires three perfect shots to reach the green.

However, the last two holes follow the philosophy of the architects - as the case of the 8th - and an immense lake is always in play on both of them.

Unfortunately, San Lorenzo has not been that well-known as a championship golf course as it deserves to be, because of its owner’s choice has not yet been possible to hold a competition of international prestige there.

Vale do Lobo

Course Details

Ocean Golf

Vale do Lobo is a well-known tourist complex in Algarve, where its three nine-hole courses are an attraction for foreign golfers who visit our country.

The «Yellow» and the «Orange» courses were opened to the public in 1968; the «Green» course was opened in 1974.

There is also a project for a further nine-hole course.

The courses were designed by Sir Henry Cotton but the land at his disposal did not have similar characteristics to Penina, both in space and in geographical scope. Vale de Lobo does not have the some «invincible» aspect as Penina, but here also Cotton's touch was brilliant, creating some first rate holes, such as the first on the «Green» course, an extremely attractive par 4 and, above all, the par-3 7th of the «Yellow» course, perhaps, «the most photographed hole in Europe», according to the chronicles. It is played to a green, 178 metres away, over a deep ravine in the cliffs. The wind plays an important role and even a good one-iron is frequently required by long hitters.
