Millenium Golf

The course is particularly open, although some holes (the 3rd to the
7th) wind between pine trees and are similar to the neighbouring
fairways of the Old Course and Pinhal.
In this more wooded area, the fairways are narrower and require greater
accuracy - while the rest of the course has a clear landscape enriched
by lakes at the 4th, 17th and 18th holes..
The arrival of the Millennium Course made Vilamoura one of the main - if
not the main - European golf destinations.
The well-established UK golf architects Haw tree & Sons were contracted
to plan this modification and design work which has culminated in the
creation of the new, exciting 18-hole Millennium Golf Course.
Refurbishment to the existing nine holes commenced in May 1999 and
included the complete rebuilding of the tees, greens and bunkers. .
Changes were made to the layout or structure of the old nine holes, but
several new design features were incorporated with a view to simplifying
the strategy of the course and in order to make it more golfer-friendly.
This
applies especially to holes 8 and 9, the only ones on this loop with
water hazards. Also, many of the bunkers have been re-shaped and the
smaller greens expanded.

Old Course |

On the way to the east of Algarve, a large property was transformed into
a tourist resort, as the result of the imagination and power of a man
who believed in the potential of the southern-most province of Portugal,
showing the methodical, integrated and controlled ways that should be
emulated by our tourism. This man was Cupertino de Miranda, who laid the
foundations of Vilamoura in a way to be regarded as an example to be
followed. We owe the benefits of Vilamoura to him, no matter what ups
and downs this resort has been through.
The Vilamoura golf courses are a reality that have turned it into one of
the popular golfing destinations in Europe, with three separate layouts.
The Old Course (ex.Vilamoura l) was inaugurated in 1969. Its project was
Frank Pennink's first one in Portugal, and we can understand why he was
invited to design and project other courses in our country.
This is a golf course that winds its way through umbrella pine woods in
a most natural way. It is the English school of course design. The
beginning of the round is apparently easy and inviting, with an easy par
4 - for those who keep the ball on the fairway - the green of which can
be reached with a good drive.

Europe, with three separate layouts one of them with 27 holes, and a
further one still in the planning process.
The architect of the Laguna golf Course
(ex. Vilamoura 3) was Joseph Lee, together with William Roquemore. They
designed three nine-hole courses,
the main difficulties being water hazards -
ten different lakes. Bermuda grass was chosen for the fairways.
The
Laguna Golf Course is a par 72 in all three 18-hole combinations, with
the second par 3 of the «Este» course being one of its best holes, as
well as the 9th of the first, on the «Norte» loop, where
water is always a threat, from tee to green.

The Pinhal Golf Course (ex. Vilamoura 2), inaugurated in 1976, is
another one of Pennink's assignments. For urban development reasons
Vilamoura 2 was modified in 1985 by Trent Jones, who retained l1 holes
of the previous layout.
The different golf design concepts of the
English and American schools are easily recognised here. The Americans
quietly readjust the terrain at their convenience, while the British
have a kind of reserve and sometimes a certain refinement. Although this
is an excellent example, we feel that the Pinhal Golf Course should have
been re-planned by an architect of the some school to maintain the
course character.

Vila Sol Golf
Course |
|
|
Vila Sol, close to Vilamoura, near the outskirts of Quarteira, was the
first individual creation of the famous English architect Donald Steel,
in Portugal.
Donald Steel is an architect who above all likes to preserve nature and
native vegetation, reducing earthmoving to the minimum by using
undulating terrain to create the type of golf course that is within the
English philosophy. This is the counterpoint to the American school
where elevated tees and greens are indispensable.
The course being with a rather complicated 381-metre par 4, with a very
tall pine- tree about 50 metres before the green that makes the line
into it more difficult. The green humps back and fast. A par here is
always a good start. Next, there is another par 4, more than 400 metres
long, a classic one, in our opinion. Describing it is not worth while;
the best thing to do is play it. The third one, another par 4, 385
meters long demands a second shot to a green on raised ground turning
this hole into the most difficult on the course. It should be mentioned
that this must be the most testing start to any Portuguese course, as
can be seen from the handicap stroke given to these three holes: 5, 3
and 1.
The 6th is a somewhat elaborate par 5, including a lake in
the middle, so we prefer the 499-metre 8th as a par 5, with a
brook crossing the fairway to protect the two-tiered green.
In the second nine, there are two par 3's of excellent design, the 13th
and l5th; the 18th has only the drawback
that the green is not visible from the tee. Another interesting factor
at Vila Sol is the excellent driving-range, but above all very
professional maintenance makes this golf course a place where you play
with pleasure.
